Debunked Hair Myths

Myth Washing hair every day is bad
✓ Truth

It depends on your hair type and lifestyle. Very oily hair or an active, sweaty lifestyle calls for daily washing. Dry or curly hair benefits from fewer washes, letting hair retain its natural oils. Your stylist at The Junction Salon can help you find the right balance.

Myth Brushing your hair more makes it healthier
✓ Truth

Excessive brushing causes breakage and damage. Brushing does help distribute natural oils, but do it gently and only as needed to avoid stressing the hair shaft.

Myth Cutting your hair makes it grow faster
✓ Truth

Hair grows from the scalp, not the ends. Regular trims eliminate split ends and make hair look and feel healthier, but they don’t influence growth rate. Trims keep hair looking thicker and prevent breakage from traveling up the shaft.

Myth Plucking one gray hair causes more to grow
✓ Truth

Each follicle produces only one hair. Plucking a gray won’t multiply them. However, repeatedly plucking from the same follicle can damage it over time, leading to thinner or absent regrowth.

Myth The same shampoo stops working over time
✓ Truth

Your shampoo doesn’t stop working. However, your hair’s needs can shift over time. Seasonal changes, heat styling, and product buildup can all call for a different formula. It’s not the shampoo that changed; it’s your hair.

Myth Blow-drying is always bad for your hair
✓ Truth

Air drying avoids heat exposure, but keeping hair wet for extended periods can actually weaken its structure, especially for fine or thin hair. Blow-drying on low or medium heat with a good heat protectant is a perfectly healthy option.

Myth Cold water rinses make your hair significantly shinier
✓ Truth

Cold water can help seal the cuticle, but the shine difference is minimal. A quality conditioner and a consistent hair care routine will do far more for your shine than water temperature alone.

Myth You can repair split ends
✓ Truth

Once a hair strand splits, trimming is the only true fix. That said, certain treatments can seal split ends, which works well for clients who want to preserve length while managing damage.

Myth Dandruff is caused by a dry scalp
✓ Truth

Dandruff is more often caused by an overproduction of oil or a yeast-like fungus called Malassezia. A dry scalp can produce flakes, but dandruff is typically an oily condition requiring targeted treatment shampoo. Read our detailed article on dandruff

Myth Hair oils make your hair greasy
✓ Truth

The right hair oil, applied correctly, moisturizes and adds shine without greasiness. The key: use a small amount and apply to the mid-shaft down to the ends, never directly at the roots.
